Use this as a checklist to plan and review your youth work initiatives

Young people's motivation

Youth work requires the voluntary involvement of young people. The first task for those working with young people is to catch the interest and motivation of young people. Ideally young people themselves should set the agenda for the project, rather than being invited to contribute to a pre-set plan.

Young people's decision-making

Young people's empowerment is a defining goal of youth work. It is essential that they are involved in decision-making at all stages from planning, through to review and evaluation.

Training and support

Training and support for workers can help focus individual enthusiasm as well as develop the vital skills and attitudes for ESD with young people.

Social benefits

As part of any review or evaluation there are a number of main points to consider including:

the learning for the young people involved – the development of skills and confidence as well as increased knowledge
the benefits for local communities and the impact a project has on community attitudes towards young people
further development opportunities including maintaining the impact of the work
