Active Community Unit, the Home Office
The ACU is responsible for the achievement of the Government's target of increasing voluntary and community sector activity, including increasing community participation, by five per cent by 2006. The Unit's aim is to promote the development of the voluntary and community sector and encourage people to become actively involved in their communities, particularly in deprived areas.

Department for Education and Skills (DfES) Global Gateway Website
The Global Gateway is a new international website, enabling those involved in education across the world to engage in creative partnerships. It is a one-stop-shop, providing quick access to comprehensive information on how to develop an international dimension to education.

Department for International Development (DFID) Global Dimension Website
DFID is the UK government department responsible for promoting development and the reduction of poverty. It provides a website which outlines how the global dimension can be incorporated into the national curriculum and demonstrates how it enriches teaching and the wider school ethos.

Environment Agency
The Environment Agency is the leading public body responsible for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales. Its website includes a Fun and Games section with environmental games, interactive animations, facts and figures and screensavers to download.

Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM)
The Deputy Prime Minister launched the Communities Plan (Sustainable Communities: Building for the future) on 5 February 2003. The Plan sets out a long-term programme of action for delivering sustainable communities in both urban and rural areas

Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA)
The QCA has developed a website to help teachers, curriculum coordinators, school managers and governors to develop approaches to education for sustainable development (ESD). The website highlights links in the curriculum to ESD and provides background information.

Sustainable Development: The UK Government's Approach
This website provides a comprehensive overview of the Government's progress towards sustainable development.

Sustainable Development Commission (SDC)
TheSDC was established as an independent body whose role is to advocate sustainable development across all sectors in the UK. The SDC also reviews progress towards sustainable development and builds consensus on the actions needed.
