Higher education

A diverse network of DEA members work within higher education (HE) to support lecturers, researchers, students and their institutions interested in bringing a global perspective to their work.

  • Approach: DEA members, partners and key stakeholders in HE work in partnership to develop a generic curriculum for global citizenship, which can act as a catalyst for future planning, and facilitate debate on what a ‘global university’ might look like.

They also collaborate to develop learning outcomes associated with global perspectives in the curriculum and to implement policies and practice on institutional ethos, accountability systems and economic choices that are informed by and reflect a commitment to global responsibility.

Two sets of indicators signal an HE Institution's commitment to global responsibility:

    1. Learning outcomes associated with global (including local-global) perspectives in the curriculum: knowledge and understanding; cognitive, social and practical skills; values and attitudes.

    2. Performance indicators associated with higher education institutions practice: institutional ethos (mission and values); accountability systems (social and environmental); economic choices (purchasing and investment).

  • Publications and case studies: DEA publications relating to this sector include: Globalisation and Higher Education (guidance on ethical issues arising from international academic activities) and Global Perspectives in Higher Education (case studies exploring how global perspectives can successfully engage students in complex issues).

You can also read through some examples of practice on this website.

  • Training and events: DEA runs a variety of training opportunities. For details of planned events visit our events calendar.

  • Policy and advocacy: DEA plays a key role in keeping members informed about policy developments and keeping policy makers informed about members' work, issues and priorities. Visit the policy section of this website for information about past, current and future consultations.

  • Current DEA priorities: To advance the case for global perspectives in HE institution policy, practice and curriculum, the DEA with key stakeholders are producing a series of publications to explore these aspects under the umbrella title of The Global University.

The first examines the role of the curriculum in equipping students with global perspectives.

The second will explore the role of senior managers as key agents in the strategic development of the ethos of institution.
