Rose Review of the Primary Curriculum – DEA draft response

Publication date: June 2009
Category: Submissions

The Primary Curriculum is being reviewed for implementation in September 2011.

Sir Jim Rose has completed his Review of the Primary Curriculum for DCSF. DEA has been involved throughout the process but much more needs to be done to ensure that global learning is integrated throughout the new curriculum.

QCA is now holding a public consultation until 24 July 2009.

DEA has drafted a response which consists of a response on the primary curriculum review form and a response to the individual Programmes of Learning. Please feel free to use elements of these drafts in your own response. We would strongly encourage DEA members to both:

- Feed into DEA's response to the consultation. Any thoughts will be extremely welcome, please email helen.young@dea.org.uk.

- Respond to the QCA questionnaires for one or more of the four areas (the primary curriculum; personal, social, health and economic education across both primary and secondary phases; subject level descriptions;  and  updated non-statutory guidance on religious education). There are Word versions of the questionnaires available on the QCA site as well as the online questionnaires. You may wish to use DEA's draft responses, above, as a starting point.

DEA has met with Sir Jim and relevant QCA officials; held a joint QCA/DEA seminar, and fed into earlier elements of the review.

Please note that this review and consultation by DCSF and QCA is separate to Prof Robin Alexander's Cambridge Primary Review. However, the outcomes of the Cambridge Review are well worth reading and may inform your response.
