Mega cities and climate change
Sustainable cities in a changing world
Half of humanity already lives in towns and cities and it is projected that in the next 50 years two-thirds of the world’s population with be living in urban environments. Major challenges of mass urban migration include how to minimise burgeoning poverty in cities, improve the access of the urban poor to basic facilities such as shelter, clean water and sanitation, and to achieve environmentally friendly, sustainable urban growth and development.
In LEAD’s experience, the importance of the urban context to sustainable development is not well known or understood and there is a critical need for building the capacity of young global leaders to understand and respond to the issues. This is especially important given the key role cities will need to play in helping to cut unsustainable consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. It is essential that future leaders are able to show leadership on these issues, which will come to dominate the world decision-making landscape in the near term.
This event explores the challenges and opportunities presented by urban development in one of the world's top ten megacities, and builds personal leadership skills through team challenges on real-world issues.
This event forms part of the wider LEAD Europe "Leadership for Sustainable Development Programme" 2008, see: www.lead.org/page/174.
