Challenges and Opportunities in the EU

Exploring international negotiation, energy policy and leadership

Back to events list

In January 2008, in response to the rising threat of climate change, the EU pledged to cut Europe's carbon emissions by 20% by 2020, and generate one-fifth of the EU's power from renewable sources by that time.

Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas claimed: “This is one of the most important measures in the series of new initiatives the Commission needs to take to step up the fight against global climate change. It is a concrete test of our political commitment to leadership on climate policy and our capacity to translate political priorities into concrete measures. It will further underpin Europe's shift towards the low-carbon economy that is essential if we are to prevent climate change from reaching dangerous proportions.“

This training event explores examples of leadership from Europe, considers the negotiation processes through which international decisions are made, and discusses how Europe can engage with the wider world for a more sustainable future.

*What are the challenges and opportunities for EU member countries in negotiating and agreeing common goals and targets for carbon reduction and increased use of renewable energy?
*Who are the key stakeholders, how do they engage in the decision making processes, and can government, business or NGOS make a difference to the outcomes?
*Will the new legislation put European companies at a competitive disadvantage compared to those in countries with less stringent climate protection laws, such as the US, China and India, and what will be the effect?
*What is the impact of the EU on climate change at global level and can the EU point the way to an international climate agreement for the post 2012 period?

In addition to broadening knowledge of sustainability, the this training balances skills development, self awareness and learning by doing.
