This document accompanies this web site, and is the one of the major outcomes from the DEA's research project on Measuring Effectiveness in Development Education. It covers in detail the work of the project, suggests methods by which to respond to the challenges of evaluating development education, and proposes a framework of 'Why? What? and How?' that organisations should adopt when evaluating their work.

Themes and trends in measuring effectiveness: review of current literature

This article also features within the Development Education Journal on Measuring Effectiveness (see below). 'Different people look for different things out of evaluation and measuring effectiveness. The methodology and tools that work for one project or organisation may not work for another. This article researches key publications that can help people to learn, understand and use a variety of approaches to evaluation'.

DEA Evaluation Handbook

The Development Education Association concluded a major research project on Evaluation in 1999, out of which one of the main outcomes has been this Evaluation Handbook. Aimed at development education practitioners and those undertaking evaluations with or for development educators, the handbook covers terms and concepts, strategizing, planning, evaluation and feedback.

Improving Practice Series Measuring Our Effectiveness

One of the DEA's aims is to 'enhance the quality of professional practice in development education' through training, advice, capacity building and information exchange. This volume is one of the main outcomes of a DEA project, the main aims of which were:

  • to gain an overview of current practice in evaluation in development education and to identify current trends, strengths and weaknesses of evaluation practice
  • to identify how organisations currently assess the effectiveness and impact of development education programmes
  • to identify models of evaluation and organisational case studies for further in-depth study, representative of key sectors and work programmes.

This volume of case studies is part of the series looking at Improving Practice in Development Education.

Development Education Journal on Measuring Effectiveness Volume 7.3 June 2001

The Development Education Journal is published three times a year. It aims to create a forum for debate on development education and the climate in which it is working, and to report on and discuss current practice, theory and research in Britain and overseas. The Journal takes the widest possible view of development education to include campaigns, public education and the media. All members of the Development Education Association receive one free copy of each issue as part of their membership. For DEA membership enquiries please contact the DEA.
